Lay of the land in Cardano Design and UI/UX

Because a lot exists already, we wanted to start the articles in this platform with some research on what exists, gathering a comprehensive detailing of it, to educate and level everyone collaborating in this project. Also, to better identify how we can contribute, it's crucial to know what we're contributing to.

Why Design and UIUX is important in Web3

No one is fearful when using a social network or their company portal or even e-banking. It's in our space that people are apprehensive, always challenged by concepts of what they're handling, always needing transparency and clear visibility on what apps are doing on their behalf. It's for that reason that User-centric design is so important in Web3.

User-Centric Design

User-centric design is the practice of placing the user's needs, mental models, and context at the center of every design decision. In blockchain and Web3 environments, this philosophy becomes mission-critical—not merely for market success, but for enabling financial inclusion and building trust in systems that handle irreversible value transfers.

The challenge in Web3 and blockchain design differs fundamentally from traditional software: users must understand both what they're doing and why it matters, often involving complex concepts like key management, transaction finality, and decentralization. Successful design bridges this gap by distilling complex interactions into intuitive experiences. This approach—exemplified by communities like Bitcoin Design and Nostr Design—requires designers to deeply understand the unique constraints and opportunities of decentralized systems.

User-centric design in Web3 also acknowledges a critical reality: users should never feel apprehensive about their interactions with these systems. Whether handling cryptocurrency, signing transactions, or participating in decentralized governance, clarity and confidence are prerequisites for adoption. This is where the expertise of design professionals becomes invaluable to blockchain communities.

The Pillars of User-Centric Design in Web3

User-centric design (UCD) is an iterative process where designers focus on users and their needs at every phase of development. In Web3 environments, this approach becomes even more critical due to the inherent complexity of blockchain interactions and the high stakes involved in financial transactions.

Core Pillars of User-Centric Design:

  1. Deep User Understanding - Conduct thorough user research to understand needs, mental models, and pain points. In Web3, this means understanding both crypto-native users and newcomers approaching blockchain technology for the first time.

  2. Accessibility & Usability - Design interfaces that are intuitive and accessible to all users, regardless of technical expertise. Web3 applications must bridge the gap between complex blockchain operations and simple, understandable user interactions.

  3. Transparency & Clarity - Present information in plain language, avoiding technical jargon. Users should always understand what actions they're taking and their consequences, especially when dealing with irreversible on-chain transactions.

  4. Iterative Testing & Feedback - Continuously test designs with real users and iterate based on feedback. This reduces costly mistakes and builds trust in the product.

  5. Systems Thinking - Consider how individual design decisions impact the broader ecosystem, stakeholders, and long-term sustainability of the application.

In Web3 specifically, user-centric design helps reduce friction in onboarding, minimizes security errors, and builds the confidence necessary for mainstream adoption.

Current Cardano references for Design and UI/UX

  • Cardano Developer Portal - Comprehensive developer resources with curriculum modules covering practical implementation on Cardano, design considerations for dApps, and community design resources.

  • Cardano.org - The main Cardano ecosystem hub featuring updates on Cardano's design philosophy, sustainable blockchain architecture, and community initiatives focused on inclusive development.

  • Cardano Stack Exchange - Developers - Community-driven Q&A where design questions and best practices for building on Cardano are discussed.

Contrast with 45B Design Centre: While these resources focus on technical implementation and developer onboarding, 45B provides the non-technical design perspective that bridges the gap between builders and end-users, emphasizing how Design and UX principles can enhance user confidence and adoption across the Cardano ecosystem.

How we can bring value to Cardano

The main engine for this project is undoubtedly the calls, spaces and livestreams, that hopefully will entice builders on Cardano, Design professionals, and overall users to be more aware of how important and delicate the topic of UI/UX and Design are.

In this platform, we hope to document distilled learnings and networking, and to document further topics and angles that can be explored. Ideally, design.45b.io becomes a reference for orientation from the Design point of view in Cardano. Connecting with other repositories, but adding a non-technical perspective for even the End-user that is merely but importantly interested in understanding the apps he is exploring.

In parallel with the other pillars, this initiative will be supporting concrete projects with moderate interventions. We aim to intervene by aligning closely with benefiting projects and complmenting their skillsets with diverse reinforcements ranging from Design to user interviews for product feedback.
